Department store chain reports another week of sales increases, with summer ranges performing well but online showing the best growth as consumers chose to stay home and enjoy the sun.
Despite major sporting events and glorious sunshine keeping customers occupied last week, John Lewis reported a 13.3% increase in sales compared with the same seven-day period last year.
Its website johnlewis.com proved a big hit with customers who chose to avoid the high street in the heat, with sales up 57.1% for the week ended June 26.
Home sales saw a 13% uplift, while summer merchandise sold well all week, with 20% gains in fitted furniture, outdoor living, upholstery, season gifts and home accessories. Electricals and home technology hasd strong performances from large and small electrical appliances.
Saturday saw the start of John Lewis' summer clearance and, said the retailer, despite the hot weather and other activities, it still "achieved a creditable 3% increase on last year and manahed double digit percentage increases on every weekday".
John Lewis director of selling operations David Barford added: "On Sunday we got off to a slow start competing with the football and the hot weather. However, clearance s in full swing and we have everything in place to maximise the customer experience."
