AkzoNobel strengthens position in performance coatings

Published: 3 July 2017 - Sue Deane

One month after US paint firm PPG withdrew its takeover bid, Dulex parent AkzoNobel has announced the acquisition of UK-based Flexcrete Technologies Ltd and an agreement to acquire French manufacturer Disa Technology (Disatech) subject to regulatory approvals.

Flexcrete Technologies manufactures products primarily used for the protection and repair of concrete substrates, allowing AkzoNobel to expand its offering in key markets including downstream oil and gas and chemical processing; commercial infrastructure; power; water and waste water; and mining and mineral processing.

Disatech supplies adhesive films used in the aerospace, transportation and industrial equipment sectors, specialising in the manufacture of self-adhesive vinyl, polyester and polycarbonate films used on aircraft, vehicles and agricultural machinery.

This deal will bring new technologies and services that complement AkzoNobel's existing portfolio of coatings and films for aerospace and transport sectors.

Since its opening bid on March 2 PPG has made two further attempts to acquire AkzoNobel but announced its withdrawal on 1 June “in the best interests of stakeholder interest of both companies” while AkzoNobel CEO Ton Büchner stated that the company would continue to “pursue a strategy of accelerating sustainable growth and profitability…that will lead to a step change in growth and long-term value creation for our shareholders and other stakeholders.”

Today’s announcement underlines their commitment to moving the coatings business forward in adding value to its products and services.

"Both acquisitions support our strategy of investing in growth and innovation and are strongly aligned with our growth strategy,” commented Mr Büchner. "They will expand our existing product and service offering, enabling us to deliver significant benefits to our customers. These deals offer us great opportunities to pursue further coatings innovations in a number of our core markets."
