All-star guests help MKM open new Penrith branch

Published: 5 August 2021 - Neil Mead

MKM Building Supplies, one of the UK’s largest independent builder’s merchants, opened its brand-new Penrith branch on Monday 2 August.

The opening of the new branch, located at a 2.1 acre site, is an important step forward for tradespeople and the general public across Cumbria.   The flagship facility combines MKM’s unbeatable product range with a state-of-the-art kitchen and bathroom showroom, providing a one-stop-shop of building related products all under one roof.

The launch day for MKM’s latest branch saw Robbie Dee, longtime host of of CFM’s Robbie Dee in the Morning, one of the region’s most listened-to radio shows, cut the ribbon on the store.  The branch also played host to the MKM Treasure Hunt; an exclusive, on the day promotion, where visitors had the chance to find special ‘golden jigsaw’ pieces hidden throughout the branch, to be in with a chance of winning a DAB radio worth £120.

Creating a total of 15 jobs in the local area, the new branch is being led by Branch Directors David Ware and David Westgarth, who bring with them more than 25 years’ experience in the builder’s merchant trade.

Speaking at the launch, David Westgarth said: “Opening our own branch wasn’t an opportunity that either David or I felt we could pass up. This is our chance to give the Penrith area what we feel it deserves; a great independent merchant, with an extensive product range, backed up by first class service from an expert team.

Kate Tinsley, CEO of MKM Building Supplies Limited, added: “I wish the Penrith team every success. They are committed to making this branch a premier destination for the trade and general public in this important area.

“As a company, we pride ourselves on providing outstanding service, delivered in a friendly and welcoming environment by our knowledgeable staff. I am confident the new branch will be a major hit and meet the needs of our customers.”

As part of its commitment to supporting the local community, MKM Penrith also confirmed an official charity partnership with Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

Hillary Wade, a Trustee of Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, who attended the opening event, said: “I’m delighted that MKM Penrith are supporting us. We work for the local community, and having a local business show us support is fantastic. This past year has been particularly hard for us, and for a lot of charities. 80% of our funding comes from the donations made by the public, and a lot of our regular fundraising hasn’t happened.

“At Jigsaw we provide essential care and support to children and their families, who have also found this past year especially difficult. Now that the world is opening up again we are looking forward, and continuing our work with families in our care.”

MKM provides a one-stop-shop for all building products, including building materials, plumbing and heating, landscaping, electrical, drainage and civils, insulation and plaster board, workwear and timber, joinery and sheet materials.
