Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

Apprentice makes rookie error at Home Hardware

DIY Week readers who are fans of The Apprentice will have enjoyed last night's episode, which featured B&Q, Wolseley and Rowlands Home Hardware.

The episode saw the teams choose two new products from a selection and then pitch to retailers for orders. Team Synergy opted for an eco showerhead and a garden tool attachment to take the effort out of digging.

Their success was varied, from a strike out at Wolseley to a massive £63,000 order from B&Q, albeit a theoretical rather than concrete one. And an off-chance visit to a local Home Hardware store bolstered the group's order book total by £12,000, although, as Rowlands Home Hardware manager Adrian Winnicott explained to DIY Week this morning, the team's maths left a lot to be desired!

"They rang us in the morning from the car. They'd been flicking through the Yellow Pages and found our details I suppose. They didn't say who they were to start with, but about an hour before they arrived they called back and explained they were filming and asked if that was okay.

"They were here for about three quarters of an hour, which only made 30 seconds on the program. No actual transaction took place of course - it's all make believe.

"One funny thing did happen though. When the lad came to fill out the order book, part of the order was 1,000 showerheads at £10 each. He turned to the girl with him and asked what 10 times 1,000 was! And her answer was £1,000! So actually, they sold them to us for £1 each, which Alan Sugar didn't pick up on.

"Customers have been ribbing me endlessly this morning, asking for showerheads. But it was great fun actually."
