Argos has been taken to task by the ad watchdog for failing to make a delivery charge clear on its website.
Someone complained to the Advertising Standards Authority about the ad for children's bedroom furniture, which stated 'Chest and Bedside Chest Package - White with Blue Handles. £37.99 Was £39.99. Save £2.00. Only available for home delivery'.
The delivery charge of £8.95 was then given at the bottom of the page along with the text: 'You only pay one delivery charge per order'. The complainant thought that the delivery charge was not made clear in the quoted price for the product.
Argos argued that an icon on the page pointed to the delivery details, and added that it had always presented the information this way and had not previously been told of any concerns.
The information was also repeated on the 'trolley' page and as part of the generic information, so the company could not see how a consumer could make a purchase without knowing there was a delivery charge.
However, the ASA decided that although text at the top of the page made it clear that the product was only available for home delivery, the full delivery information was very small and consumers had to scroll to the bottom of the page to read it.
Because the information would not have been clear to consumers it concluded that the ad was misleading.
