B&M eyeing up B&Q retail space
Published: 12 August 2013
Retailer B&M Bargains is considering moving into a new unit at a Dundee retail park that is currently occupied by B&Q.
The DIY chain holds a lease on the unit at the Kingsway East retail park until 2015 and it's undecided as to whether it will remain there after this date. Plans have been submitted to Dundee City Council proposing that a B&M Homestore could open if B&Q decided to move out.
An application has also been made by Threadneedle Investment Ltd to change the rules so that businesses are allowed to sell food from the unit. In a report, Mike Galloway, the council's director of city development, supports the prevention of food sales over fears for the impact on trade in Dundee city centre.
It is suggested that B&M will close its city centre branch if it moves to the retail park and there will be a limited amount of new jobs being offered as a result.
A B&Q spokeswoman said: "At this time, no decision has been made on renewing the lease in March 2015."
The application is being considered at a council meeting today (Monday). DIYWeek.net will have more on this as it develops.
