B&Q bedding breakthrough ditches polystyrene and peat

As of this month, B&Q is eliminating polystyrene packaging across its range of bedding plants and introducing an eco-friendly replacement.

The new pack, which is called EasyGrow with Teabag Technology, consists of a biodegradable 'teabag' made from corn starch, a renewable resource that is fully compostable. Each bag is filled with coir, a natural fibre extracted from coconut husks, and is up to 95% peat free.

B&Q is the largest garden retailer in the UK, selling around 140m bedding plants a year. Until now, they would have been packed in non-degradable, non-recyclable polystyrene trays which, had they been placed end to end, would have stretched from Land's End to John O'Groats.
