Kingfisher-owned home improvement retailer joins thousands of individuals and organisations in pledge to cut carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.
B&Q this week joined the 10:10 climate change campaign, vowing to cut its carbon emissions by 10% next year. Its parent company Kingfisher has also signed up to the campaign.
Last month, B&Q set itself firm commitments to reduce its environmental impact, aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by 90% by 2023. Director of social responsibility Matt Sexton said: "It's too much to think about a 90% reduction in one go so breaking it into bite-sized chunks like 10% during 2010 is a great way to motivate people."
The retailer has highlighted lighting, transport and packaging as key areas where it sees opportunities to make changes to meet the targets.
All lighting displays have switched to energy efficient lighting, while B&Q is now looking at ways to enhance the natural light and utilise technologies in stores to reduce the dependence o artificial lighting.
A fleet of 60 double-decker lorries were introduced earlier this year, saving the retailer 4,800 miles and 4,600kg of emissions a day, while B&Q has also committed to reduce its packaging by weight by 15% by 2012.
