Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

B&Q joins the Rainy Day Trust

Published: 4 April 2010
B&Q, Europe's largest DIY retailer, has become a corporate member of the Rainy Day Trust, the charity of the home improvement industry.
Euan Sutherland, CEO of B&Q and Kingfisher's UK Division, said joining was the right thing to do. "When B&Q was invited to become a corporate member of the Rainy Day Trust we didn't hesitate to join," he said. "It's our industry charity, and it was the right thing for B&Q to do as a responsible retailer.

And he went on to suggest that other retailers and suppliers follow suit: "I would encourage all companies in our sector to become members so that the charity can continue its great work supporting people who have worked in our industry."

The Rainy Day Trust was founded in 1843 as the Iron, Hardware and Metal Trades Pension Society, and later received patronage of the Prince of Wales as the Royal Metal Trades Benevolent Society. It is the only charity which exists solely to help people who have worked in the hardware, housewares and DIY trade and industry, and who now need a helping hand.

"We are absolutely delighted to have B&Q on board," said Trust vice-president and DIY Week publisher Colin Petty. "It's the market leader, and it has shown leadership by giving us its support and becoming a corporate member. We're obviously hoping that many more companies will follow that lead, because every new subscription means we can say 'yes' to more requests for assistance."
