Silver Star DIY of Barry, Wales, is celebrating 125 years of business, spanning depression, recession and two world wars.
The business is currently run by brothers David and Terry Sylvester, whose grandfather John Sylvester launched the business back in 1890. It is believed to be one of the oldest businesses in the Vale of Glamorgan area.
The first shop opened in the High Street of Barry in 1904 before undergoing two relocations and ending up in Station Street, Barry Dock, where it remained until the 1980s when the property was sold. The current shop can be found on Subway Road.
The shop prides itself on its wide range of product choices - it specialises in wallpaper and stocks more than 600 different patterns - which why, according to Terry Sylvester, it has continued to trade so successfully for so long.
He said, "It’s a great privilege to be still running the business. It’s great to welcome customers whose families came to Barry when the town was built. We have customers from several generations.”
It is said that the business has worked on houses on every street in Barry, as well as churches, steam traction engines and fairground rides at Barry Island.
"We are up against companies with low overheads, but we’ve got the contacts,” Mr Syvester added. “The small business has the advantage to obtain bargain products that the big operations don’t have. The newest development in wallpaper is glitter.
"We can also talk to the customers about colour and design, as we have done all our lives.”
