Bathroom retailer Victoria Plumb rapped by ASA
Published: 26 February 2014
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned Victoria Plum, trading as Victoria Plumb, from showing a misleading advert from its Autumn Savings Event again.
The offer, which appeared on the bathroom retailer's website in November, listed two items on sale at reduced prices, which the ASA ruled were misleading.
The first item was a Bologna wall-mounted basin which was claimed to have been reduced from £119 to £39 with a saving of £80, and the second item was an Escala Waterfall basin mixer tap reduced from £149 to £59 with a saving of £90.
A complaint was made against the sale because it was understood the two items had not previously been on sale at the higher price.
Victoria Plum argued against the complaint and said the prices were genuine, but the company was unable to provide any evidence to support its statement.
The ASA ruled that: "Victoria Plum needed to provide documentary evidence showing that the items had been sold at the higher prices listed in the ad for a sufficiently long period to ensure that they were genuine retail prices and that consumers were not being misled by the savings claims.
"Because we had seen no evidence to demonstrate that, we concluded that the 'was' prices had not been substantiated and were therefore misleading."
The ASA banned Victoria Plum from showing the ad in its current form on its website again.
