Buyer sought for Isle of Bute tool shop
Published: 24 August 2011
Bute Tools General Store is up for sale after 33 years' trading in the seaside town of Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, which lies in Scotland's Firth of Clyde.
Owner William McFie started the business in 1978, and now runs the store with wife Diane, daughter Gillian and six part-time members of staff.
He is hoping to retire as soon as possible, and is looking for someone to take on the business, which also comes with a three-bedroom home above the shop and a large yard for storage.
Mr McFie told
DIY Week: "We're retiring and Gillian is going off to get married. We're looking to sell as soon as possible. We'd consider selling to a chain but I'd like to see it go on as an independent. My family have been on this island for a long time. I would like to see the name continue but if it's not to be there's nothing you can do about it."
He adds: "I am hopeful of finding a buyer. We have a good turnover - we're doing about £450,000 a year, and we have absolutely no competition. I'm the B&Q of this island! It's actually quite a unique business and I would like to see is go on as it is. If it doesn't we'll have to go to plan B but I haven't even thought about going down that route."
Since its early days as an ironmongers, the store has expanded to sell tools and DIY products, timber, garden products, kitchenware, electrical and household items and gifts.
The Isle of Bute is a popular tourist destination. The main town of Rothesay, where Bute Tools is situated, is home to most of the island's population of around 7,000.
