Carpetright to open standalone bed stores

Floorcoverings retailer to rebrand five of its existing carpet outlets as 'Sleepright by Carpetright'.
Carpetright this morning confirmed to DIY Week that it plans to open a chain of standalone bed stores and has recruited two former directors of Bensons for Beds, Bill Carrahar and Paul Burgham, to head up the venture.
A Carpetright spokesman explained that beds are already a big category for the retailer, which currently operates around 260 bed stores within existing Carpetright branches and was working towards a target of 275.
The plan is to rebrand five existing Carpetright outlets as standalone bed stores under the 'Sleepright by Carpetright' banner.
The spokesman added that the move is just a trial for now but will allow Carpetright to significantly expand its offer. "Current bed stores within Carpetright stores are around 2,500sq ft and the new stores will be more like 10,000sq ft, so you can do a much bigger range."
The first of the new-format stores is expected to open in Uddingston, a suburb of Glasgow, in November.
