What was once one of the most ridiculed accessories seen on British high streets, the wheeled shopping trolley, is now having the last laugh.
Argos says it has seen sales increase by almost 50% since this time last year.
The fact that some retailers now charge for carrier bags is thought to be behind the surge in popularity of this more enduring alternative, along with the fact that it is more capacious and easier to handle.
Commonly associated with grannies, the shopping trolleys hit a popularity peak in the 1970s before the arrival of hypermarkets and disposable carrier bags.
Demand gradually declined with the growth of out-of-town shopping centres, where a car was closer at hand and lifting and carrying was minimal.
Says Argos bags buyer Laurelin Sharp: "We first noticed a surge in the shopping trolley sales early last summer - which coincided with consumers moving towards discount food retailers and bulk buying.
"Trolleys are really handy and versatile and we see them being snapped up by customers of all ages."
The once dominant tartan design has been updated with modern materials and prints. Argos' most popular line is a purple spot number selling for £19.99.
