Crown achieves 100% recycling target

Published: 28 November 2011
Crown Paints now recycles 100% of the waste from its main sites after spending three years boosting recycling rates at its manufacturing hubs and decorating centres in the north of England.
Crown achieves 100% recycling target
The company achieved recycling rates of 90% earlier this year, and has worked closely with its recycling contractor to pre-treat and segregate the remaining amount. This is now composted or dealt with using special technology including anaerobic digestion and cleaning.

As a result, Crown's manufacturing sites in Darwen and Hull now recycle all waste, as do 67 Crown decorating centres in the north. The remaining centres will also make the switch before the end of 2011.

Crown Paints sustainability manager Mark Lloyd said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the company and I am proud of all our staff for being so enthusiastic in helping us become a greener manufacturer.

"We set off on our journey to send no waste to landfill in 2008 and it has always enjoyed the full support of our senior management team. We think it is important to strive to be a sustainable business. This achievement demonstrates that we practice what we preach."

Crown's long-term commitment to sustainability has included mapping the carbon footprints of all 240 branded products. The company is also commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions at sites by 10% by 2015, and by a further 15% by 2020.
