DIY job could have caused fatal explosion

Published: 22 May 2013
A DIY job going tragically wrong may be responsible for a fatal accident at a home in Nottinghamshire last weekend.
Police are speculating that some kind of DIY project being carried out by members of a family could have caused the explosion at a house in Newark that left two people dead and several others injured.

Leslie Rourke, 71, and his 40-year-old daughter-in-law Jeanette Rourke were both killed by the blast, while Mrs Rourke's husband Nick is in a serious condition in hospital. The explosion, thought to have been caused by an escape of gas and which demolished the entire house, also left three neighbours with injuries.

There are now worries that the structure of other houses in the terrace may have been damaged. A hundred people living nearby were evacuated overnight.
