Dobbies to close Paisley centre
Published: 29 September 2011
Demand for small centre has dropped off following the opening of Dobbies' state-of-the-art Garden World just three miles down the road in Braehead, Glasgow.
Dobbies chief executive James Barnes said today: "It is with regret today that I announce our decision to close Dobbies Garden Centre on Paisley's Hawkhead Road on December 31, 2011.
"Unfortunately there has been very little demand for our smaller centre in Paisley since the opening of our nearby Braehead Garden World in February this year. At the time we made the decision to keep our Paisley centre open as a smaller centre focusing on horticulture. We felt that it was a valued garden centre to people in Paisley however there simply hasn't been the demand we anticipated.
The Tesco-owned garden centre chain explained it had entered into a period of consultation with the 32 members of staff employed at the Paisley centre but that it hoped to retain as many employees as possible by offering relocation to other Dobbies centres.
Dobbies operates three centres within a 20-mile radius of its Paisley branch, at Braehead, Milngavie and Cumbernauld.
