Earthy Marsala is Pantone colour of the year

Published: 10 February 2015
Global colour authority Pantone has chosen Marsala, a robust and earthy wine red, as its colour of the year for 2015.
Earthy Marsala is Pantone colour of the year
Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman says the shade exudes "confidence and stability. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness.

"This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors."

Pantone says Marsala provides a unifying element for interior spaces, and can be incorporated via paint, accessories and accent pieces. Its characteristics are enhanced when the colour is applied to textured surfaces, making it an ideal choice for rugs and upholstered living room furniture.

It is also a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room, used for tabletop, small appliances and linens. Pantone predicts that Marsala will be especially prominent this year in striped and floral patterns on printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws.

In choosing its colour of the year, Pantone combs the world looking for colour influences. These can come from fashion, films, art, travel, technology and even sports events.
