Fire at Homebase store near Plymouth
Published: 30 September 2013
A fire broke out at the Homebase store in Liskeard, near Plymouth, in the early hours of Saturday morning. After initial inspection, backup crews were called and around eight fire engines attended the scene to tackle the blaze.
At its peak, around 80 fire-fighters from across the county were involved. It is reported that the fire destroyed about 30% of the stock at the store on the Bubble Retail Park, but it is unknown where it started and was said to be "accidental". An investigation is now under way and Homebase says it is "assisting fire officers to establish the cause of the fire".
Crews had to cut their way through the metal door shutters to gain entry to the premises and fire-fighters wore breathing apparatus inside the building. Smoke spread across the area and nearby roads had to be closed early on Saturday morning.
Homebase spokesman, Adam Manning, said: "For health and safety reasons, the store won't be trading at this moment in time while we assess the damage. The cause of the fire was accidental."
There was no mention of how long the store will be closed and how many staff will be affected.
