Former Focus DIY ceo bags Woolworths top job
Woolworths has announced the appointment of Steve Johnson as chief executive with effect from September.

The former Focus DIY chief executive – a post he held for four years until July 2007 – said he was excited to be joining the high street retailer and would be 'focused on value creation for all stakeholders.'

Richard North, chairman of Woolworths, said Mr Johnson's strong background in both retail and consultancy, together with his particular experience in achieving a turnaround at Focus, was key in the appointment.

"He brings the strategic and operational skills that the Group needs to help it move to the next stage of its development," Mr North said.

Before Focus DIY, Mr Johnson worked for GUS; Asda in a variety of roles; and in consulting at The Kalchas Group and Bain & Company.

Earlier this year, Woolworths reported that pre-tax profit fell to £11.7m in the 52 weeks to February 2, down from £16m in 2007.
