Gardeners' purchasing plans revealed

Gardeners are planning to keep spending next year, with a water feature named as the most desirable item for 2011, according to a new survey from Hangar Seven.
The creative production agency, which specialises in garden centre marketing, surveyed around 200 gardeners from a wide variety of socio-demographic classifications and age groups.
Quizzed on their spending plans for the year ahead, 80% of those surveyed said they intended to spend an average of £540 on planting and maintenance. Around 33% said they planned on completing larger projects and would spend an average of £1,050.
Top items on the 2011 wish list included a vegetable plot, greenhouse and shed, while a perfect lawn, conservatory, hot tub and garden furniture also featured. However, the results found that the number one item people want for next year is a water feature.
The survey also revealed that the majority (44%) of gardeners still turn to friends and relatives for advice on gardening, while 38% said the internet is their first reference point. However, out of those surveyed, 85% said they expect to find a brochure instore, and 95% find them a useful source of information. Half of respondents said they use brochures for range and price research, and 41% for inspiration or advice.
