RHS survey reveals a 'gardening renaissance' with increasing numbers of people joining their local garden and allotment clubs.
The survey of 100 of the RHS' affiliated gardening clubs found that 73% of clubs saw their membership increase or stabilise over the past year. Some clubs reported that they are now full to capacity and have people on waiting lists hoping to join.
According to respondents, members love the social aspects of the clubs, as well as the opportunity to swap advice and plants.
RHS community horticulture manager Stephanie Eynon said: "Our survey reveals people have been joining or even forming their own gardening and allotment clubs for a variety of reasons - from wanting to grow their own food and plants; to saving cash due to the credit crunch; to wanting expert gardening knowledge and swap tips; but by far the biggest benefit for joining up is the social aspect - which is great."
The positive findings are a complete turnaround from a couple of years ago, said the RHS, when low membership threatened the future of many clubs.
