Departure from Konstsmide UK means he is no longer eligible for the position, says association.
GIMA has announced that Glynn Davis has tendered his resignation as president.
It is also understood that Mr Davis has left Konstsmide UK after a 're-organisation' within the Swedish parent supplier of festive lighting, where he was responsible for product development, marketing and sales for 18 years, and in recent years as sales director.
GIMA said: "Mr Davis has left the employment of Konstsmide and as a result is no longer eligible for GIMA membership or to continue in the role of president."
Peter Field GIMA vice president said: "I am really sorry to hear of this news both for Glynn and for GIMA.
"Glynn has been a great president and leader of our association. He will be a hard act for me to follow. It will be a big loss to our members and to the garden industry as a whole if we let Glynn move to another line of business."
GIMA says it is due to receive nominations at its council meeting on December 12 for vice president for the 2008/10 years, and will decide on a 'strategy' for the remaining four months of Mr Davis' two-year term of office.
Konstsmide declined to comment.
