MPs will be debating the Enterprise Bill - concerning the extension of Sunday trading hours - this week.
And, according to a new report by the BBC, ministers may bring in changes aimed at tackling SNP concerns in an attempt to avoid defeat over plans to relax the restrictions placed on Sunday trading. If certain safeguards - including the protection of higher Sunday pay rates in Scotland - are put in place, SNP MPs are set to abstain in the vote, according to the report.
This would counter-act the rebellion expected by those who have reservations about the proposed plans.
The government wants to let local councils in England and Wales decide whether larger retailers should be allowed to stay open longer than the current six hours permitted on a Sunday. It is hoped the move would benefit struggling high streets.
However, those opposing the move say it would have a detrimental effect on smaller businesses who are currently allowed to open longer on Sundays. According to the BBC, it is understood the SNP will not counter the measures as long as higher Sunday pay rates in Scotland are protected, and other safeguards for employees are introduced.
The party had initially said it would vote against the Bill.
