Green DIY celebrates 20 years

Published: 11 October 2011
Sussex DIY independent Green DIY celebrated its 20th birthday on October 4, and marked the event with a special promotional weekend over the weekend of October 7-9.

Customers at the Uckfield store were offered a 20% discount on everything in store when they spent £20 or more. The offer was advertised in local papers and on local radio, and the store was decorated with balloons.

Green DIY opened its doors at 10am on October 4 1991, after former Payless DIY directors Ted Lansdowne and Doug Spickernell decided they had had enough of multiple DIY retailing. As the name of the business suggests, they were early adopters of environmental issues, such as only offering recycled carrier bags.

"Although Ted died last year and has been missed, we carry on as before," Mr Spickernell told DIY Week. "Some of the staff have changed, but the rationale of the business continues to stand us in good stead in these challenging times."
