A cheque was presented by Santander's corporate relationship director Mike Donaldson to Greenfingers' director of fundraising and marketing Deborah Skillicorn.

"We really appreciate the donation," she said, "Our gardens make a real difference to the lives of children cared for in the hospices and their families by enabling them to enjoy previous times together, away from the bedside, and appreciating therapeutic benefits of nature."

Mr Winfield added: "I was pleased to be invited to appear in the Santander campaign. The offer of the charity donation was a fantastic surprise and the work for hospices offered provided by Greenfingers make them a very worthy recipient."
