Hayes Garden World md in court on conspiracy charge
Published: 22 January 2014
The owner of leading Cumbrian garden centre Hayes Garden World, who has already spent
time behind bars for a drink-driving offence, is back in court this week on a new charge.
Thomas Hayes, the 46-year-old managing director of the £8.3m-turnover Ambleside business, received an 18-week jail sentence in July 2012 after crashing his Porsche in 2010 when four times over the legal drink-drive limit.
However, he had maintained that he had been a passenger in the car at the time of the accident and that it had been his friend Derek Henderson who had been driving - which Mr Henderson backed up.
Now both men are back in court, accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by lying about who had been driving the car. Both deny the charge.
