The Swedish furniture giant will trial the new format in a location on Sweet Briar Retail Park in Norwich.
In order to test the new retail format, Ikea will take over a unit currently occupied by Currys/PC World, which with a footprint of just 19,000sq ft, is considerably smaller than existing Ikea stores.
An Ikea spokesperson said: "We want to provide our customers with a simple, convenient and enjoyable shopping experience. As such, we are reviewing our expansion strategy on an ongoing basis and exploring opportunities to become more accessible to many more people.
"We can confirm that we have identified a site in Norwich that we will use to test a new retail format that aims to make Ikea more accessible than ever before. We will provide further details on our plans for the site in due course."
The retailer has not confirmed when the new outlet will open or how many jobs it will create.
The move will allow the retailer, which currently operates 18 stores across the UK, to make its offer more accessible to UK shoppers, as planning permission issues have dampened other expansion plans in the past.
The retailer is currently awaiting feedback from planning officials on proposed plans to build a 32,000sq m Ikea store over two levels in Reading - plans that have already been scaled back from initial proposals. It is also working closely with Exeter City Council to tie up legal agreements needed to allow the council to issue the planning consent for a site and adjacent to the A379 and Newcourt Way in Exeter, Devon.
