July is Independent Retailer Month - an annual campaign which encourages consumers to shop locally with independent businesses.
Events and fun activities are taking place in cities, towns and villages across the country with the aim of boosting the independent retail sector and increasing footfall.
Research carried out by the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) found that for every £1 spent locally, 50p to 70p recirculates back into the local economy.
In contrast, only 5p of every £1 spent out of town finds its way back into the local economy.
Founder of Independent Retailer Month, Clare Rayner, said: "Most people don't realise how valuable their custom is to their local, independent businesses.
"We need these customers to understand how their hard-earned cash can boost their local economy, depending on where they choose to spend it."
Ms Rayner founded Independent Retailer Month in 2011 and since then the campaign to promote independent businesses and to encourage local shopping has gone from strength to strength.
