A scheme to give burgled homeowners free vouchers for the big DIY sheds has been attacked by independent retailers.
The £15m measures announced by home secretary Jacqui Smith this week offer discount vouchers for home security products from B&Q and Focus DIY.
Independents have contacted diyweek.net to say the scheme will hit their trade and is an endorsement of the big sheds over their own business.
They're calling for the vouchers to be valid in any DIY store, especially with the busy Easter trading weekend so close.
One trader is so angry he has decided to accept the vouchers even though he'll not be able to redeem them.
Raymond Day, owner of Hoyland Common DIY in South Yorkshire, said: "I've put a sign in our front window telling people we'll take the vouchers and offer them a further 20% off."
Tony King, owner of Kings DIY in Berkshire also expressed his dismay at the scheme going through the big chains.
