The Newbury store will operate over two levels, focusing on furniture, furnishing accessories and electrical and home technology ranges. It represents a £8m investment by the department store chain and will be the eighth 'at home' store to open since the launch of the new format in 2009.

The 40,000sq ft store will be located in Parkway – a new shopping centre development, which is set to open in Newbury town centre this October.

John Lewis managing director Andy Street said: "We continue to believe that there is a strong opportunity to grow our business in the home and electricals sector and are delighted to be bringing a John Lewis at home to Newbury town centre. Although there are a number of John Lewis department stores within an hour's drive of Newbury, research has shown that customers would prefer greater convenience and ease of access to our inspiring products, great value and exceptional service, which our town centre 'at home' shop will provide."

Customers will be able to make use of the click and collect service and can also browse the full John Lewis range instore, with online ordering points located throughout the Newbury branch.

John Lewis opened its first at home store in Poole in 2009 and has since opened shops in Swindon, Tunbridge Wells and Croydon. A further three are planned this year, with Newbury opening in 2012.

John Lewis head of format development Tim Harrison commented: "The success of existing John Lewis at home shops has demonstrated that a smaller format works and has given us the confidence to continue to extend our reach. The Parkway development in Newbury is a good fit for us in terms of location and catchment and is a great opportunity to bring our 'at home' format to Berkshire, providing customers with a broader and more convenient shopping offer."
