John Lewis has announced plans to open a four-level department store at the Westfield shopping centre in London.
The retailer's planned 230,000sq ft store at the centre, near White City/Shepherds Bush, will be its first West London branch and there will be over 350,000 product lines on offer, including home, fashion and technology. It is expected to open in 2017 and the move is set to create around 600 jobs in the area.
The new store will anchor the shopping centre's new extension and John Lewis has said it will create "a bold and impressive architectural statement", with an outdoor dining terrace with views over the listed Dimco buildings and the BBC Television Centre.
The planned Westfield London extension will feature 600,000sq ft of additional retail space and is expected to create around 6,700 permanent new jobs. The new department store is expected to be a major attraction for customers, adding to the 27 million UK and tourist shoppers who visit the shopping centre each year.
John Lewis managing director Andy Street, said: "Our business in London has strengthened significantly over recent years. It is therefore right that we now move to open in Westfield London and bring our offer to customers in the west of the city."
Westfield's European managing director, Michael Gutman, added: "John Lewis is the most requested store at Westfield London and we are delighted that we will soon be able to deliver on this for our customers. The new store will be another huge attraction and will become an important centrepiece of the massive regeneration taking place in the White City opportunity area with the creation of thousands of new homes and jobs."
John Lewis already has 30 department stores across the country, as well as an increasing number of 'at home' stores.
