Just what every posh winter garden needs: five-star accommodation for wildlife visitors
Published: 14 July 2020 - Neil Mead
Hedgehog numbers are in decline* and bat populations are under pressure. The Posh Shed Company has a novel – and, of course, exceedingly posh – answer to these predicaments: the most stylish bat boxes and hedgehog houses these little creatures are likely to encounter.
October/November is a good time to get these little buildings in place, as bats and hedgehogs will be looking for snug places to hibernate.
The Posh Shed Company’s tiny hedgehog home will keep your garden visitor safe and warm all winter. It has a pull-out tunnel which creates a ramp to help the hedgehog scramble in and is raised slightly off the ground to prevent damp.
The house is made from pressure treated timber and has a cedar roof. It costs £75, with an additional charge of £15 to cover postage and packing.**
The Posh bat box is built to the recommended specifications of the Bat Conservation Trust and is designed to be draught free and thermally stable, creating the perfect habitat for bats to roost in.
With a height of 2ft 7in (70cm), and width of 2ft 1in (60cm) at its widest point, and painted in a Sadolin Ebony, the little box will make an elegant addition to the eves of a house, or perhaps a garden tree trunk. Provided the box faces south and gets a good amount of sunlight during the day, it is likely that it will become a popular spot for local bats.
The bat box costs £69 plus £15 for p&p.
