Kitchen retailer promised "solid granite" but delivered laminate

The Advertising Standards Agency has banned an advert from Really Cheap Kitchens after a customer enquired about a £795 granite worktop kitchen and was told the worktops were laminate and the price did not include fitting costs.
A circular ad from Really Cheap Kitchens proclaimed the "hi-gloss white slab kitchen comes with solid granite worktops, oven, hob and extractor plus solid backed cabinets. This can be yours for only £795 complete."
When the complainant tried to purchase the kitchen they were reportedly told the price of £795 only covered kitchen units, not granite worktops or fitting costs. They were also told the worktops were made from laminate rather than granite.
The ASA said it had not seen any evidence that the kitchen feature in the ad was available for £795 and that it included solid granite worktops. It also considered the claim "£795 complete" implied in the absence of further qualification, that fitting costs were include in the price.
Really Cheap Kitchens did not respond to the ASA's enquiries, which the ASA said was "concerning" and a breach of CAP code. It said it "reminded [Really Cheap Kitchens] of their responsibility to respond promptly to our enquiries and told them to do so in future."
The ASA ruled the ad breached a number of CAP codes including misleading advertising, substantiation and qualification. Banning the advert in its current form, the ASA has referred the matter to CAP's compliance team.
