Legal action threatened against Woolworths administrators Deloitte

Published: 12 February 2009
Woolworths administrators Deloitte is being threatened with legal action over its handling of employees redundancy payments.
The Usdaw union believes Woolies workers deserved better treatment and is attempting to make a claim to the Employment Tribunal.

The 'protective award' which the tribunal could award on behalf of Woolworths members in the retail stores and distribution centres could see 90 days back pay awarded.

The union, one of Britain's largest trade unions with over 370,000 members nationwide, campaigns for the rights of retail workers.

John Gorle, Usdaw National Officer, said: "We believe there were serious legal breaches by the administrator, Deloitte, who failed to provide the union with essential information and failed to consult in a meaningful way.

"Employees gave their all in the final days of trading in very difficult circumstances and were entitled to be treated better than this.

"Usdaw will now be taking the legal route to send a message to all administrators that the union is here to defend our members' rights."

Deloitte was asked to comment about the action but has declined.
