Liberal Democrats call for energy efficiency improvements to properties

Homes lose energy too easily, says leader
The Liberal Democrat party is calling on UK homeowners to upgrade their properties to improve energy efficiency.

Using a new initiative, 'climate change begins at home', the party wants all new homes to be built to environmental standards. It also believes upgrading existing homes will go some way to meeting energy requirements.

To fund the improvements, the Liberal Democrats suggests homeowners be encouraged to use 'energy mortgages'.

Leader Menzies Campbell said: "People are paying high fuel bills because their homes too easily lose energy. These proposals will help people save the environment and cut bills."

According to the party, houses are responsible for 27% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions. It says by adopting Swedish standards of household emissions, Britons would save £385 a year in bills.
