Like-for-like sales up 4.7% at Homebase

Home Retail Group has today reported that like-for-like sales at Homebase increased by 4.7%, in the 18 weeks to January 4, thanks to growth in big ticket sales.
The interim statement from the parent company of Homebase and Argos also showed that sales in the remaining categories at the DIY retailer were slightly up year on year. Total sales for the period grew by 2.3% to £464m. This makes a positive change from January last year, when,
reporting on the same period between 2012 and early 2013, sales at Homebase stood at £453m.
Total sales were also up at Argos this year, by 3.6% to £1,808m. The retailer reported of a decline in the homewares sector, while electrical products delivered the strongest sales performance.

Home Retail Group also officially announced today the appointment of John Walden as its new chief executive, who will take over from Terry Duddy on March 14.
This comes after
Mr Duddy announced in September that he would be stepping down.
Diyweek.net reported on Tuesday of rumours that Mr Walden, who is the current boss of Argos, was the board's preferred choice of replacement.
HRG chairman John Coombe said: "John joined the Group in February 2012, since which time he has done an excellent job as managing director for Argos. I look forward to working with John in his new role.
"I would also like to extend the Group's thanks to Terry for his long serving commitment. His contribution during his time with the Group has been significant, including driving the development of the Group, providing clear leadership through challenging times and pioneering changes in retail that position the business ready for a digital future. Terry leaves with our very best wishes for his continued success in the future."
Mr Walden added: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the Group at such an exciting time. In Argos and Homebase we have two of the UK's best known retail brands, which have both shown good recent progress and have clear strategies in place to deliver growth.
