An angry customer of a branch of Home Bargains in Greater Manchester found himself in court after tipping a pot of paint over the counter.
The incident arose when staff refused to let Ian Barnes of Bredbury return the paint. After emptying the contents of the can in the shop he admitted criminal damage and was ordered to pay £25 in compensation and £85 in costs at Stockport Magistrates Court.
Barnes had bought three tins of paint at Home Bargains on his girlfriend's credit card, but when he realised he had too much he took one tin back to get a refund on her card. However, the shop staff refused because his girlfriend was not present, and said it was store policy.
Barnes told the Manchester Evening News: "They said if I was returning something the card holder had to be there, but they weren't bothered when I was paying.
"You can't have it one way and not the other, so I just threw the paint over the counter and thought stick it. I think a lot of people will have sympathy."
The store manager was said to have felt intimidated by Barnes' behaviour.
