The controversial former television entertainer Michael Barrymore is now reported to be working in a garden centre.
According to today's Mirror, the ex-star is doing a part-time stint at Tomlins Garden Centre in Brentwood, Essex. He says he does not get paid for the work but helps out as a favour for a friend, stacking shelves and humping bags of compost.
For three decades from the 1980s, Mr Barrymore was one of television's highest-paid entertainers, the owner of a mansion and a huge collection of luxury cars. However, his career collapsed after a friend, Stuart Lubbock, drowned in suspicious circumstances in Mr Barrymore's swimming pool in 2001. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder but was not charged.
Now 60 and a recovering alcoholic, Mr Barrymore told The Mirror: "People come over and wish me well. Sometimes I walk around with them to show them the plants."
A customer said: "I did a double-take at first - I thought it must have been a lookalike but it was really him. He was very friendly and said lots of people recognise him and ask him how he's doing."
