Celebrating gardening on a budget is the theme for a new category introduced by the RHS and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) for this year's Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.
The new category, called 'Low cost, high impact' was exclusively open to members of the APL to showcase a practical approach to gardens that also "provide a wow factor where visitors will be able to recreate the garden design, based on a fixed budget for hard landscaping, plant material and labour."
A total of four gardens have been selected to showcase what can be achieved for a £7k, £10k and £13k budget.
For the £7k budget the selected designer was Nilufer Danis from Landfirst Consultants with 'Our first home, our first garden.' Designed for a young professional couple with little spare cash and little knowledge of gardens and plants, the idea is to create a space for them to chill out with friends.
'A compromising situation' was the £10k garden designed by Richard Wanless from Twigs Gardens. The garden is themed around compromises, with places to sit and chat to neighbours or quietly with some lawn, as well as flower borders, a wildlife area and a pond.
Mike Harvey from Arun Landscapes designed one of two winning £13k budget gardens, entitled 'Summer in the garden.' This Mediterranean-themed garden promotes small gardens without lawns and features Yorkshire crazy paving.
The second £13k garden was designed by Roger Smith of Garden House Design and named 'Live Outdoors.' This space is designed simply to provide an outdoor area to socialise and entertain with a feeling of seclusion and privacy.
The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show runs from July 3 - 8.
