Obituary: Kevin Whiteley
Published: 9 September 2009
Pilkington's Tiles Group chairman and one of the highest profile figures in the ceramics industry, passed away September 7.
It is with the regret that the directors of Pilkington's announced the passing of Kevin Whiteley, who died the morning of September 7, 2009.
Mr Whiteley became chairman of Pilkington's in May 2004 after he acquired the group with Ray Tarr, Steve Lloyd and Sean Whiteley.
One of the highest profile figures in the ceramics industry, Mr Whiteley is acknowledged for his contribution as chairman and, together with his fellow directors, for the successful turnaround of the business, which now expands to worldwide manufacturing facilities.
Prior to the acquisition of Pilkington's, he will be remembered for establishing one of the first independent trade and retail groups in the ceramics industry - Tile City, Tile Clearing Houses and Surface Coatings - with his brother Paul in the early 1970s. He made an immense contribution to the industry, establishing links with UK, Spanish and Italian tile manufacturers.
Pilkington's chief executive Ray Tarr said: "He was a larger than life character and for those that know him, had a wicked sense of humour. He will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with Kevin's family at this time."
Mr Whiteley leaves behind wife Val, son Sean and daughters Julie and Nick, together with his brother Paul and sister Odette who will sadly miss him.
Messages of condolences can be sent to Jane Matts, Pilkington's Tiles Groups plc, Rake Lane, Clifton Junction, Manchester, M27 8LP, where they will be passed onto Mr Whiteley's family at an appropriate time.
