Obituary: Martyn Hocking
Published: 26 October 2012
Former DIY Week news editor Martyn Hocking died on Friday October 19 after a battle with cancer. He was 48.
Martyn joined DIY Week, then titled Hardware Trade Journal, in the 1980s, and was its news editor for several years before moving on to become editor of Practical Householder, the monthly consumer DIY magazine.
In October 2008 he was appointed editor of Which? the consumer champion's magazine, which he described as his "dream job". He oversaw a successful redesign of Which? in 2009, and was named Editor of the Year by the British Society of Magazine Editors in 2011 - an award for which he is again shortlisted this year.
"Martyn was a lovely chap to work with," said former DIY Week editor Colin Petty. "He had a journalist's nose for a story, and once he got his teeth into something he was very hard to dislodge. But he managed to combine it with a relaxed, easy-going manner, and he always treated his colleagues and his readers with great courtesy. I was sorry to lose him from DIY Week, and I'm deeply saddened to hear of his death."
