Oven cleaner ad 'not sexist' says watchdog

Published: 20 May 2009
The TV ad for HomePride oven cleaner, which claimed the product made cleaning "so easy even a man can do it", was not sexist according to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling.
Oven cleaner ad 'not sexist' says watchdog
The ad, which received 673 complaints, and prompted many of you to comment on the original story, was accused of making men look lazy and stupid and of reinforcing gender stereotypes by suggestion that cleaning was traditionally a woman's job.

Watch the ad here:

The ASA noted that: "some might consider the humour in the ad in poor taste, but concluded that it was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence."

It said: "We noted that the ad used mild humour to refer to traditional gender stereotypes, but considered that the overall impression was such that it did not portray either gender in a way that stigmatised, humiliated or undermined them using harmful stereotypes.

I don't know whats worse, the hypocracy of the ASA to suggest it isn't sexist (targeting any sex in a derogatory manner is sexist!) or the fact that it allows adverts for companies trying to encourage males to do a womans work!

if the gender was reversed questions would be asked in government , the advertising agency would be under threat, and the ad would be taken off air . what happened to equality never arrived for white males.

I feel that the oven pride ad is sexist. I believe in the spirit of equality (which seems to be long forgotten) in that bigotry is to be identified by the victim.

The ASA in New Zealand admitted in a report it published online (Re: a Kinder Bueno ad) that it may have viewed the same ad as sexist if a female had been the victim. They apply a test of what would be offensive to prevailing community standards. This is unfair, because society is currently at the stage where bigotry against men in advertising is widespread.

Products include the "All Men Are Bastards" knifeblock, showing a man with knives piercing through parts of his body including his head. See link below:

You can be certain if situation was reversed ASA would have found guilty and various Ministers of State would have added their pathetic wrath!
