The owner of Highgate Garden Centre in north London has announced that the business will close its doors for the last time this month.
The garden centre is part of the Capital Gardens Group, which says tumbling sales have made the decision to cease trading "inevitable".
Formed in 1990, Capital Gardens is London's largest group of garden centres, with Alexandra Palace, Morden Hall, Neal's Nurseries and Woods of Berkhamsted Garden Centres along with Highgate. It also runs Capital Garden Landscapes.
However, last year the group sold for £2m the freehold of the land on which Highgate Garden Centre stands and now it expects to call time on the business as well within the next two weeks. Stock is being sold off in a closing-down sale.
Two members of staff are relocating to Alexandra Palace, while others are leaving or taking redundancy.
There is speculation locally that the site's new owner, which is based in the British Virgin Islands, has plans to build luxury houses on the land.
