Banned weedkiller used in a number of attacks on plants in the village of Cayton, threatening the locals' chances in the Britain in Bloom competition.
The suspect is believed to have used Sodium Chlorate to kill off more than 30 floral displays, in what members of the Cayton in Bloom group believe to be a deliberate attempt to sabotage the town's hopes in the nationwide contest.
According to a report by the BBC, it will cost an estimated £20,000 to dig up the floral displays, remove the banned chemical and refill the beds.
Cayton in Bloom chairman Lee Hutchinson said the village was devastated and couldn't understand why someone would want to target the flower beds and planters. He told the BBC: "We raise money to do the work and we just work in the village and do the best we can for the whole environment. We enter competitions but what we really want to do is improve our local environment for the community and visitors."
Over the past month, several areas in Cayton have been subject to a deliberate attempt to kill off the plants on display, which texts confirming the use of Sodium Chlorate.
