According to the latest from the ONS, the volume of retail sales in April increased by approximately 4.3% compared with the same month last year.
Compared with March 2016, the quantity bought increased by an estimated 1.3%.
But household goods stores saw a 0.3% decrease in the amount spent compared with the same month last year, though the volume increased by 3%.
Internet spend on household goods increased by 33.6%, the biggest increase by far of all the sectors polled by the ONS. This made up 8.6% of sales as a proportion of all retailing.
For retail in general, value of spend increased by 1.2% compared with April 2015 and 1% compared with March 2016. Online sales values increased by 9.3% in April 2016 compared with April 2015 and increased by 1.7% compared with March 2016.
Average store prices fell by 2.8% year-on-year.
