Richard Burbidge owner buys FW Mason

Published: 22 June 2011
Ripat Ltd, which owns Richard Burbidge and sister company Atkinson & Kirby, has acquired troubled timber products firm FW Mason from administrators for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition safeguards 78 jobs at the 12-acre Colwick site, which the new owners will continue to operate. The company, trading as Masons Timber Products, and brand will continue to operate independently of the Richard Burbidge business.

Atkinson & Kirby's Ray Scott said: "Masons is a long established and well respected brand in the timber trade and the employees have done a great job during very difficult circumstances.
"The business has a solid future in Nottingham with our investment and Masons can concentrate on its traditional strength of providing high quality service to customers throughout the country."

Nottingham-based FW Mason entered administration on March 25 this year, citing rising fuel costs and lack of available credit as key factors.

Administrator the P&A Partnership has been trading the business, including the 12-acre Colwick site, since then, while a buyer was sought.

I agree with every comment made by my good friend and ex colleague Athlyn Jones. I was also fortunate enough to be employed by Masons for 36 years covering the neighbouring area based in Bristol, when Athlyn retired I also covered his area for 2 years until I retired early due to ill health, I extend my best wishes to all my ex colleagues and customers.

When i heard about Masons demise i was gutted. I was employed by them for 36 years as an Area Manager covering S.Wales +Hereford and retired 4years ago. They were a wonderful company to work for and i thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. The directors were gentlemen and i had the utmost respect for them. My colleagues too, were a great bunch of lads and i forged a good bond with them. My immediate manager Adrian Carter was a terrific guy to work with and i thank him for all the help he gave me.I hope he will be kept on by the new owners as he would be a great asset to them.Masons were very popular on my area, some of my customers have dealt with them for well over 40 years and were very loyal to them. Best wishes to all my ex-colleagues and customers.
