Rightway Bevans to open 16th store

Published: 4 June 2010
DIY, home and garden chain Bevans, now owned by the Rightway chain, announces new store opening this summer.
Rightway Bevans to open 16th store
Speaking to DIY Week, Rightway Bevans md David Clarke said the latest addition to the store portfolio, a 5,000sq ft ex-Woolworths store, is one the company has had its eye on for some time.

"We've been in negotiation since last October," said Mr Clarke, but things were delayed by the condition of the property, which he said, "left a little bit to be desired". However, with all the necessary work now completed, the company has signed the lease on the unit and will open under the Bevans fascia.

"It's part of our strategy to increase the combined store portfolio [Rightway stores and Bevans stores] up to 20," said Mr Clarke, and to fill in any obvious geographical gaps. And it seems the new store ticks both boxes as it's the 16th store in the portfolio and, said Mr Clarke, "Flint was on our list.

"And it's doubly exciting for us," he said, "as Bevans started in Flint." In fact, the new store is only about 200 yards from the original shop, which opened in Flint in the fifties. "So Bevans is coming back home," said Mr Clarke, adding that feedback from the town's residents has already been very positive so hopes are high for the opening, scheduled for a soft launch in early July.

In terms of reaching the target of 20, Mr Clarke said the company is "actively looking - we'd like to get another one open this year". But, he said, it all depends on how quickly the new stores turn a profit and cease being a cost on the company balance sheet, a process he said can take up to three years in some locations.

"We're obviously very weather dependent, but generally we're doing OK considering the economy," said Mr Clarke. "That's why we're investing in the future."

Hello Patricia,

We have only recently upgraded our card terminals to enable us to take contactless payments in our stores. It is a new process for us, however what you have described does not match our policy for card transaction handling.

Since your most recent comment I have delivered additional training to the store and clarified the correct way they should deal with the new payment method.

I apologise for the issue you had in our Abergele store, which I am confident was a misunderstanding of a new process and hope you will shop with us again in the future.

Many thanks for your swift response John, perhaps I could just confirm that I meant contactless rather than swiping my card. My objection was that this was done without my permission and that I was informed that this was a new method for all card payments which the customer had no choice in.

Regards,

Hello Patricia.
I am the Area Manager for Bevans. What you describe is not our procedure for accepting any card Payments. We do not swipe any cards. We put the card in the terminal and follow the instructions given by the terminal which includes the entering of the customer s PIN number in the machine. The new contactless system is slightly different but again we do not swipe any cards.
I am now investigating this incident to find out what happened. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I can be contacted direct on john@rightway.ltd.uk if you would like me to reply in detail or if you have other information you wish to pass on to me.

When paying for goods at Mr Bevan Branch in Abergele, I was very upset when the assistant took my bank card and swiped it herself without my permission. She then advised me that this was a new process and that all purchases where in this manner. I advised her that she had no right to swipe my card as I only want to enter my purchases by pin number, she said that this was the new way and purchases could only be made in this way. Not all my cards can be swiped which is the same for many people so she then admitted that payments could still be made by pin number. This has left a very uncomfortable feeling with regards to trusting Mr Bevans stores which is a shame as I have shopped there for many years, However if staff are going to use my card in this way I would rather not shop there.
