Sale DIY in Cheshire is relocating after almost 40 years of trading.
Ged Smalley, 49, who has owned the business for five years and worked in it for 32, said rising overheads ad falling sales led to this tough decision.
He said: "The shop's a bit of landmark round here, but the new premises is just a stone's throw away and on a much smaller scale, so hopefully I'll be able to survive there. The beauty of the new place is that it comes with three private parking spaces out the front. Parking has been a nightmare for us here."
Mr Smalley will stop stocking timber and sheet material, and plans to enhance the things he does well such as curtain rails, radiator covers and also his key-cutting service.
He said the recession has been tough and, with his lease due to expire on the original Sale DIY store, it was time to move.
He hopes to take loyal customers with him and eventually increase staff numbers if the new premises proves successful.
