Cooler weather last week, compared with the same period the previous year, impacted sales of warm weather products, such as refrigeration and fans, contributing to a 2.3% decline in sales of electrical and home technology across the department store business.

However, Android and smart home had a strong week, with sales up 19%, explained John Lewis director of shop trade, Maggie Porteous.

Total sales for the week were up 1.3%, as customers continued to shop summer clearance offers and Ms Porteous said: “It was a particularly good week in our shops, despite being up against a busy weekend of sport.”

Home sales were down 0.7%, although textiles and home accessories had a strong week of trading, with sales up 8.1%. John Lewis’ own-brand Find, Keep, Give collection continues to drive sales in the Gift department, which posted a sales jump of 10.8%.
